Improved Perinatal Outcome Data Reports
Planning and Evaluation at the Local Level for California Counties

The Improved Perinatal Outcome Data Reports (IPODR) are intended to provide information on which to base health planning and allocation
decisions, and evaluation of these decisions.
IPODR consists of a customized file derived from three different data sources:
1. the California Birth/Death Vital Statistics (VS) published by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
2. the Patient Discharge Data (PDD) published by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD).
3. geographic boundary files from the Tele Atlas Corporation.
Under a contract supported by OSHPD, the first two of these data sources are also available from OSHPD in linked form as VS/PDD.
This combined data source allows the generation of crosstabulations of PDD and VS variables. It is the latter data source that was used to derive the IPODR data.
The IPODR website gives access to a selection of the captured data at the California, county, and ZIP code level.
Currently the website includes an annual California County Profile Report (CCPR). The California County Profile Reports are compiled
with particular emphasis on year 2010 objectives.
For many of the statistics, ZIP code level maps are available to see geographic variations. These maps
can be downloaded in PDF format. Trend diagrams for 1991 up to 2003 can also be viewed and downloaded.
The data sources used for IPODR complement each other in that:
1. The Vital Statistics Linked Birth/Infant Death Files contain vital statistics data and socio-demographic information on mother, father,
and child; information on prenatal, delivery-related, and neonatal conditions; information on child survival; and information on the
mother's reproductive history.
2. The Patient Discharge Data (PDD) contains morbidity, length of stay, and information on the use of health resources for all in-hospital live
births in California civilian hospitals.
The VS/PDD files that combine these two data sources and therefore the IPODR data files are available for years 1991 to 2003.
Changes and Enhancements
The Improved Perinatal Outcome Data Reports (IPODR) - formerly named Improved Perinatal Outcome Data Management (IPODM) - have been a
resource to California counties since 1983. IPODR can be used to extract a number of data elements collected on the California birth
certificate or the hospital discharge record at the ZIP code level. Most data are also available by race/ethnicity and/or maternal age.

Additional Data Sources for Perinatal Outcomes and Planning
The California Perinatal Profiles site is an effort that is complementary to IPODR. It
provides both public - state and regional information - as well as confidential - hospital specific - information with the goal of providing
data to all the maternity hospitals in California for the purpose of continuous quality improvement. The public site includes state and
regional reports, information on how to use data for quality improvement as well as samples of what is available on the confidential,
hospital specific site.
